What is a Standard Possession Order?
If you are in a custody battle, or anticipate one in the near future it is important to understand some terminology you are likely to come across. Chances are you will be presented with a range of options for a custody arrangement. One likely scenario is that either you or the other party will have what is called a "Standard Possession Order" (SPO).
A Standard Possession Order is a relatively common arrangement which gives one of the parties a right to possession during certain days of the week and month. The other parent will have the child during all other times, unless an exception to the Possession Order is agreed upon by both parents.
If the parents live within one hundred miles of one another the Standard Possession Order will allow one of the parents possession during the first, third and fifth weekends of every month. Also, the parties will alternate possession during major holidays, and on Mother's Day Mom will have the child, on Father's Day Dad will have possession.
